General Travel Tips
Seeing Thessaloniki
Overview: Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, is often overshadowed by Athens, but is worth spending at least a day exploring the cultural landmarks and unique history dating back to 315 BC. Much has been written about Thessaloniki's up and coming arts scene, seaside cafes, and diverse ethnic history.

Seeing Athens
Overview: Visiting the major attractions in Athens may be completed in a 1-3 days maximum. The Athens airport is connected to the city by suburban rail with connection to the Athens Metro. Visit the Greece page to view articles on what to visit while in Athens and a map of the Athens Metro. We recommend staying near Syntagma Square or in Kolanaki, near major metro stops and in walking distance of main visitor points of interest.

Seeing the Greek Islands:
Overview: With over 6,000 islands, each offering a unique landscape and cultural nuisances, every visitor should visit at least one island. From Athens, transportation is best by plane or ferry (port of Piraeus) to several main islands, and from Thessaloniki, best by plane. Please keep in mind that August is peak travel season in Greece, and ferries often face delays. Some alternatives to the most popular islands (Mykonos and Santorini) include: Chios, Corfu, Hydra, Paros, Patmos, Spetses. Visit Aegean Air for flight schedules from Athens and Thessaloniki.
